Hailing from Australia, rock band CROWDED HOUSE just announced their newest North American Headline tour - GRAVITY STAIRS TOUR. Known for their massive hits dating back to the late '80s and early '90s, they won the world's hearts for "Fall at Your Feet", "Weather with You", "Better Be Home Soon", "Distant Sun", and "Don't Dream It's Over". With legendary hits up their sleeve, they're back in the game, set to release their newest album "Gravity Stairs" by the end of May via BMG. CROWDED HOUSE is back! Known for their blockbuster hits back in the late '80s and early '90s, the Australian rock band is taking their hits, such as "Fall at Your Feet", "Weather with You", "Better Be Home Soon", "Distant Sun", and "Don't Dream It's Over", alongside new music off of their upcoming album "Gravity Stairs" back to the stage. Following the release of the new LP this May 31st via BMG, the band is kicking off their newest headlining North American tour - GRAVITY STAIRS TOUR.
Gearing up to hit the road in support of their upcoming LP, the band has been teasing new songs off of the album, first with their ultimate comeback single "Oh Hi", and now with "Teenage Summer". The former is the band's first original music in two years, influenced by frontman Niel Finn's advocacy for So They Can, a nonprofit dedicated to building schools in Tanzania and Kenya.
"I’m hoping the song comes across without needing to know the backstory," Finn shared in an official release. "But it’s very much inspired by these incredible kids and their magnificence."
"Teenage Summer" is another song that sheds light on children's lives. "My grandson Manaia told me ‘Teenage Summer’ was one of his favorite songs," Finn shared. "He’d identified the peak moment in the song and a light went on. It’s that simple, the children must be heard."
About the new album, Gravity Stairs takes inspiration from a stone staircase located where Finn takes some holiday trips, relating it to his mindset as an artist. "It’s a metaphor for getting a little older and becoming aware of your own mortality, your own physicality," he explains. "Things are getting a little harder, and there’s more determination needed to get to the top, but there’s still the same compulsion to climb them."
Though Crowded House disbanded in 1996 following a series of farewell concerts at the time, the band was reformed in 2006 with drummer Matt Sherrod. Following another hiatus, the group came back in 2020 with a new line-up, with Neil Finn as the frontman, joined by Nick Seymour, Mitchell Froom, and Finn's sons Liam and Elroy. In 2021, they released the album "Dreamers Are Waiting", featuring singles "Whatever You Want", "To the Island", and "Sweet Tooth".
In a conversation with Rolling Stone about the band's comeback, Finn explains "we don’t want to be that same band now," explaining how there's still hints of the eighties in their new music that holds a blend of the signature Crowded House sound with new and modern elements. "I like to think the songs can be equally as good," and explaining how maybe some people won't find it immediately catchy or a classic, "when we handed our first record into Capitol, nobody was saying it was going to go straight onto the radio. They were like, “I don’t know if you have the singles.” Sometimes hits and popular songs aren’t obvious until they happen."
